Guide to the Janos Presidio collection, MF498
Janos, a small town in northern Chihuahua State, was the site of a Spanish presidio, or military post, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It continued as a military site during the Mexican period and is best known for its role in trying to control Apache Indians in the region. These documents describe part of the history of Janos, the local government, and the church.

Abraham (Margaret Berlin Beard) papers, MS530
Margaret Berlin Beard Abraham was registered nurse in Texas. She graduated from the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in El Paso, Texas in 1941. The Margaret Berlin Beard Abraham papers date 1919 – 1953. Types of materials include correspondence, nursing school diplomas and certificates, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera. These papers help document nursing activities at the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing and the Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso, Texas from 1938-1943.
Acosta (Manuel) collection, MS638
Manuel Gregorio Acosta (1921 – 1989) was an important El Paso artist. The collection, MS638, dates 1920s – 2009, bulk 1972 – 2002, and helps document Acosta’s work and career as an artist. Types of records include correspondence, photographs, slides, and publications.
Acosta SolÃs-Vargas family papers, MS560
The Vargas family played an important role in the politics of the Ciudad Juárez – El Paso area during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Acosta Solís-Vargas papers date 1752 – 1927, bulk 1821 – 1912. Types of records include government documents, certificates, property deeds, land sale and government documents, wills, and correspondence.
African American Studies Office collection, MS635
The UTEP African American Studies Office collection, MS635, dates from the 1900s to 2013. The collection contains materials about Douglass High School in El Paso, African American history in El Paso, Dr. Lawrence Nixon, and race in the United States. Types of records includes photographs, yearbooks, clippings, booklets, and other items. The program was established in 1996.
Aguirre (Anthony L.) collection, MS198
Anthony L. Aguirre was born 11 February 1918 and died 19 November 1993 in El Paso, Texas. This collection contains mostly photocopied documents about the Hacienda Oacalco, in Morelos, Mexico and a typescript.

Allen (Terry de la Mesa) papers, MS307
Terry de la Mesa Allen (1888-1969) was a general in the U.S. Army and served in WWI and WWII. The Terry de la Mesa Allen papers date 1907-1969 and contain correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, and other documents and mementos. Official documents include training memoranda for both the 1st and the 104th Infantry Divisions during World War II. The correspondence spans the years 1918-1968 but is most voluminous during the periods of WWI and WWII. The collection also contains approximately 300 photographs documenting General Allen's life including many old family photographs.
Alvarado, et al. vs. El Paso Independent School District legal files, MS221
Alvarado, et al. vs. El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) involved several families who filed a class action lawsuit against the El Paso Independent School District, accusing the district of discrimination against Mexican-American students and employees. The Alvarado v. EPISD legal files, MS221, date 1910 – 1980, bulk 1970 – 1975. Arranged in five series, the legal files document the class-action lawsuit Alvarado vs. El Paso Independent School District (1971 – 1979).
Anderson (Rowland) family mining records, MS094
The Anderson family lived in El Paso between 1898 and 1956. The family owned several mines in Mexico during the early twentieth century. The records date 1898 – 1953 and contain maps, titles, testimonies, and receipts. The records relate to the purchase and sale of mines in the state of Chihuahua by the Anderson family.

The Viola Mary Hadlock Anderson photograph collection, PH093, dates from the 1940s. The collection consists of nine photographs of the campus of the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (now UTEP).
Antone (Evan Haywood and Mary Ann Hamilton) papers, MS549
Evan Haywood Antone was a professor, journalist, and longtime resident of El Paso. The papers date 1922 – 2012, bulk 1970s – 1990s. Types of records include correspondence, notes, photographs, and other items. These materials help document Antone’s research interests and career.
Eve Ball (1890-1984), a well-known historian and authority on Apaches, lived in Ruidoso, New Mexico, near the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation. She wrote a number of books about the Apaches and the Southwest and was honored by the U.S. Senate in 1984 for her life's work. The collection consists of photographs, business and financial records, newspaper clippings, and a transcript of John S. Chisum’s diary.
Barber (E.A.) Memorandum and Notebook, MS188
Edwin Atlee Barber was born in Baltimore, Maryland on 13 August 1851. He was an assistant naturalist for the Hayden Survey, the first U.S. Government-sponsored expedition to explore what is now the Four Corners area of the Southwest. This collection consists of two plastic comb-bound photocopies of Barber’s handwritten notebook from the Hayden Expedition of 1875.
Ho Baron is an American sculptor known for surrealist figures. The collection, MS457, dates 1980 – 2020. Types of records include news clippings, books, and other materials. This collection helps document Ho Baron’s career and activities.
Bellman (Sam and Helen Krupp) papers, MS460
Samuel Isaac Bellman (February 25, 1888 – February 26, 1961) was a longtime El Paso resident who owned Bellman’s Dry Goods Store. His wife, Helen Krupp (February 26, 1888 – April 12, 1962), immigrated to the United States in 1911 The papers date 1910s – 1963, bulk 1910s – 1940s. Types of records include ledgers, financial statements, abstracts of title, deeds, and other materials related to their business and property.
Benner Sr. (Archie V.) engineering files, MS164
Archie V. Benner, Sr., architectural engineer, was born in 1897, and worked in El Paso, Texas for 55 years, as part of the firms of Benner, Bynum, and Dinsmoor; Hartger and Benner; and also Frasier and Benner. The collection consists mainly of office files from the years 1920 to 1967 for Benner’s jobs in and around the El Paso, Texas area, including New Mexico. Although Benner’s projects included residences, most of the files are for the construction of commercial buildings, hospitals, schools, and churches. Materials in the collection include contracts, reports, correspondence, notes, plans, books, photographs, drawings, and blueprints.
Benton (Ian) papers relating to Chihuahuan haciendas, MS126
Ian Benton (born 1887) was a rancher and cattleman with his base in Chihuahua, Mexico. Consists of materials (1707-1956) relating to two early haciendas located near Chihuahua City, Mexico that were co-owned by Ian Benton and his business partner, Félix Francisco Maceyra. Types of records include correspondence, ledgers, deeds, and maps.
Albert Frank Bettle was an engineer for 36 years at the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC). The Albert Bettle papers date from 1939 – 1990, bulk dates 1958 – 1969. Types of records include maps, programs, brochures, photographs, newspaper clippings, promotional materials, government-issued booklets, correspondence, and film strips about IBWC projects.
An educator, lecturer, political activist, and state legislator, Anita Lee Blair (1916-2011) advocated for safety and accident prevention, disability and women’s rights, and transparency and accessibility in government. The Anita Lee Blair papers date 1944-2011, bulk 1946-1953. Types of records include photographs, correspondence, clippings, publications, scrapbooks, books, and other printed materials. Arranged in three series (Biographical Information, Safety Lecturer Career, and Legislative and Political Career), these papers document Blair’s life and career as a Texas state legislator and as a freelance safety lecturer.
Border Rights Coalition records, MS531
Founded in the early 1990s, the Border Rights Coalition (now the Border Network for Human Rights) is a human rights organization based in El Paso, Texas. The records date 1982-1999, bulk dates, 1985-1994. Topics covered in the collection include: labor strikes, labor unions, Customs and Border Patrol’s abuse reports, and help to immigrants (specifically about naturalization and citizenship).
Braddy (Haldeen) collection, MS154
Professor of English at the University of Texas at El Paso and prolific author Haldeen Braddy achieved international recognition with his books on Chaucer, Poe, Pancho Villa, and Southwest history and folklore. Before coming to UTEP in 1945, Dr. Braddy taught at the universities of Kansas, New York, New Mexico, Southern California, Tulane, Texas Christian, and Texas Tech. He graduated from East Texas State, received a master’s degree from UT Austin and a doctoral degree from New York University. Dr. Braddy retired from UTEP in 1978. He died in 1980.

The Wayne Brendt print and postcard collection contains materials relating to the Mexican Revolution, the U.S. Army in Veracruz, El Paso during the Mexican Revolution, Fort Bliss, and Vietnam. The records date from 1904 – about 1980s
Brown (Bryan Wells) papers, MS212
Bryan Wells Brown (June 30, 1896 – January 24, 1964) was a businessman and writer. He lived and worked in Mexico much of his adult life, including the period 1923-1929, when he was associated with the American Smelting and Refining Company, and from 1938-1952, when he owned a mining machinery company, Ameco, S.A. The bulk of the papers (1861 – 1964) consist of manuscripts by Bryan Wells Brown. The papers also contain some correspondence, some business records, genealogical research, and photographs.
El Paso newscaster, author, and historian, Conrey Bryson was born in Cleveland, Utah, October 13, 1905. Bryson worked for KTSM until 1964 and then as an administrative assistant for Congressman Richard C. White. Bryson’s papers contain manuscripts and research for his two books, Down Went McGinty and Winter Quarters, several unpublished manuscripts, radio scripts from KTSM, and personal papers which include speeches from Easter services and Christmas letters.
Building the American Dam in El Paso photograph album, PH090
Located on the Rio Grande (El Paso), 140 feet north of where the west bank of the river enters Mexico, the American Dam is a diversion dam constructed in 1937 – 1938. The Building the American Dam in El Paso photograph album, PH090, contains 289 silver gelatin photographs primarily in corner mounts on twenty loose album pages. About half of the images in the album show the construction of the American Dam and Canal along the Rio Grande. In addition to the American Dam and Canal images, the album contains photographs of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico; Colorado; Arizona; and New Mexico.
Burciaga (José Antonio) collection, MS412
José Antonio “Tony” Burciaga was an artist, writer, and activist born in El Paso, Texas on August 23, 1940. The José Antonio Burciaga collection spans the years of 1972-1996. Types of records found in the collection are newspaper clippings, photocopies of clippings, articles by or about Burciaga, sketches, literary journals, flyers for Culture Clash, mural flyers, and posters. These records document his work as a journalist, artist, muralist and his time as a resident fellow at Stanford University.
Burges – Perrenot family papers, MS262
The Burges brothers were pioneers, lawyers, and civic leaders in El Paso. The Burges-Perrenot family papers date 1835 – 1837, 1890 – 2013 and consist of personal correspondence and scrapbooks that include genealogical and historical research, speeches and addresses, and research material relating to the family’s many interests including literature, history, law, forestry, conservation, irrigation, politics, and the military. The collection also contains social invitations, programs, pamphlets, and postcards with many scenes of early El Paso and Juarez.
Caldwell (Renate) papers, MS257
Renate Caldwell is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso. She received a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and Mass Communications. Caldwell explained in an interview with the El Paso Herald-Post that the idea for her documentary, No Key to Turn (1983), started with a class assignment asking students to explore conditions in El Paso’s Southside. With backing from the Texas Committee for the Humanities and the Frank E. Gannett Foundation, Caldwell produced and directed No Key to Turn. The documentary explores housing discrimination, public housing, and poor living conditions in South El Paso. Caldwell also edited the film with James Burns. Rodolfo Reyes was the production manager and Trisha Miller filmed the documentary.

Calleros (Cleofás) papers, MS231
Cleofás Calleros (1896-1973), an important local historian and community leader, was born in Río Florido, Chihuahua, Mexico and immigrated to El Paso, Texas in 1902. In the early
Cassell (James Wilson) magic lantern slides, PH055
James Wilson Cassell was a medical doctor based in New York who was also an amateur photographer. Most of the slides have Beseler Lantern Slide Company printed on the mounts, but it is unclear whether some of the slides were part of educational sets sold by that company or whether that company only processed and possibly hand-colored Dr. Cassell’s own photographs. The collection contains an estimated 1,900 slides dating from approximately 1920 – 1927. The slides are mostly of foreign countries and archaeological sites, but also include images from the United States.

Born in 1934, Amelia (Amy) Mendez Castillo was a social worker in El Paso. Her papers date 1964 – 2009, bulk 1970s – 1990s. Types of records include publications, correspondence, reports, photographs, and notes. The papers help document Castillo’s activities as a social worker.

Born in El Paso, Elliot Chess (d. 1962) was a decorated military pilot and writer. The Elliot Chess papers, MS238, date circa 1910s – 1959. Types of records include correspondence, military orders and service documentation, literary manuscripts and notes, photos, clippings, medals, and artwork. These materials help document Chess’s family life, military career, and writing activities.
Chicano Services Section of the UTEP Library collection, MS191
The Chicano Services Section of the UTEP Library collected materials relating to Chicano activism, culture, and history during the 1970s and early 1980s. The collection, MS191, dates 1951 – 1983, bulk 1966 – 1975 and consists of publications, pamphlets, clippings, photographs, negatives, and other items that document Chicano history and culture as well as Chicanos’ social and political activism in El Paso, California, and the Southwest.
The Chicano vertical files date circa 1960s - 1980s and contain clipppinggs, publications, periodicals, and other materials. These files help document Chicano history and culture, particularly in El Paso, other parts of Texas, and California.
The Church of St. Clement is an early El Paso Protestant church. The Church of St. Clement collection dates circa 1900 – 2007. Types of records include yearbooks, directories, photographs, histories of the church, brochures, programs, and other items.
Civilian Conservation Corps – Fort Bliss District collection, MS 684
The Civilian Conservation Corps (1933 – 1942) was a public relief work program in the United States for unmarried and unemployed young men during the Great Depression. The Civilian Conservation Corps – Fort Bliss District collection, MS684, dates 1936, 1952. The collection includes the CCC – Fort Bliss District official annual of 1936 (includes some photographs and autographs), a CCC company 2842 badge, and a 1952 issue of The Stabilizer. These items belonged to Hilman Frock, a CCC participant.
Club de España Paso del Norte collection, MS645
The Club de España Paso del Norte studied and collected materials relating to the music and culture of Spain. The collection dates circa 1990s – 2000s and contains photographs, videotapes, newsletters, CDs, and other items that document the organization’s activities and Spanish music and culture, including zarzuelas.
Roy E. Coalson was an actor and military officer. The papers date 1908 – 1986. Of particular significance are personal photographs and documents from Coalson’s experience in Vladivostok, Russia during WWI when the United States militarily intervened against the nascent Bolshevik revolution in Russia.
The Coldwells were a pioneer El Paso family. The Coldwell family papers, MS521, date 1870, 1874 – 1954. Types of records includes photographs, correspondence, and court documents. These papers help document the Coldwell family’s history and activities as well as Texas history.
Connor (James) papers relating to the El Paso Chamizal land dispute, MS143
James F. Connor worked in the Publicity and Information Department of the United Home Owners of the El Paso Area and opposed the Chamizal settlement. Consists of materials relating to the El Paso Chamizal land dispute. Materials include newspaper clippings, correspondence, scrapbooks, reports, copies of speeches, photographs, and maps. The papers date 1959 – 1970.
Cook (Thomas Ira) papers, MS222
Thomas Ira Cook (1907 – 1976) was a political science professor and writer. He taught at UTEP from 1966 – 1976. His papers date circa 1920 – 1976. Types of records include correspondence, course materials, articles, and manuscripts.
The Cooper family papers, MS673, document the career and family of C.H. Cooper as well as lumber mills in Chihuahua and Durango and the Mexican Revolution. The papers date circa 1900s – 2001, bulk dates, circa 1900s – 1950s.
Council on America’s Military Past publications, MS216
The Council on America’s Military Past (CAMP) was founded in 1966 in Phoenix, Arizona. CAMP helps preserve former U.S. military installations as well as researches other aspects of military life. The collection dates 1973 – 1995 and consists of journals, newsletters, and correspondence.
Critchett (Belle Christie) papers, MS386
A teacher, writer, suffragist, and political activist, Belle Christie Ferguson Critchett (1868? – 1956), supported and promoted many progressive era-issues of the time, including women’s suffrage and the legal status of women, good citizenship and political reform, maternal health and child welfare, prison reform, prohibition, and the peace movement. The Belle Christie Critchett papers date 1915 – 1968, bulk 1918 – 1935. Types of records include correspondence, clippings, publications and other printed material, maps, posters, songs, a glass lantern slide, and photographs.
Critchett and Ferguson Assayers records, MS025
The Custom Assay Office, also known as Critchett and Ferguson, began in El Paso around 1902 and continued until 1950. Otis A. Critchett (1876? – 1950?) and George W. Ferguson (1872 – 1940) worked as assayers, metallurgists, and chemists for individuals and several mining companies in Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico. The Critchett and Ferguson Assayers
Cunningham (Jonathan R.) papers, MS287
Jonathan R. Cunningham served as Director of Planning for the City of El Paso from 1958-1978. The collection dated 1958 – 1978. It consists of correspondence, copies of speeches, and reports concerning areas such as city planning and zoning, the Chamizal, relocation of the Rio Grande, the El Paso International Airport, urban land use, community development, United States/Mexico border improvement and development, the environment, the Franklin Mountains Wilderness Park, Pueblo de la Ysleta del Sur, historic preservation, local history, population and housing trends, transportation and traffic projections, and international relations.
Daughters of the Republic of Texas, MS694
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas – El Paso Rio Grande Chapter scrapbooks date 1987 – 2021, bulk 1987 – 1991 and 2017 – 2021. Collection consists of four scrapbooks, which contain clippings, photographs, and other items that recount the chapter’s activities and information about Texas history.

Born in Boquilla de Conchos, Chihuahua, Mexico, Abelardo “Lalo” Barrientos Delgado (November 27, 1931 – July 23, 2004) was a teacher, social worker, community organizer, and writer. The Abelardo Delgado Collection dates 1967 – 2010, bulk 1970s. Types of records include publications, correspondence, writings, clippings, photographs, articles, programs, and other printed material.
Dietrich (Hervey W.) papers, MS432
Dr. Hervey William Dietrich was part of the internal medicine staff at Hotel Dieu Hospital and worked on the Medical Records Committee at the Hospital in 1951. The Hervey Williams Dietrich papers date from 1955 to 1968, bulk 1955-1956. The Correspondence series contains letters and copies of letters to and from Dietrich to members of the U.S. House of Representatives, Senate, and the President of the United States concerning patients and medical costs and bills. The Newspaper clippings and Minutes series consists of articles pertaining to the shortage of nurses, a nurses’ strike, and Providence Memorial Hospital.

Dodson (J.L. and Harriet) papers, MS471
John Leslie (“J.L.”) Dodson (d. 1999) was the principal owner of the Mountain Pass Canning Company, which included the Old El Paso food brand. The papers date from 1943 – 1990s and help document the Dodsons’ lives as well as the history of Old El Paso foods and the Mountain Pass Canning Company.
Dudley (Richard M. and Frances M.) papers, MS261
The correspondence, photographs, clippings, and ephemera in the collection reflect the activities of Richard M. Dudley (a former mayor of El Paso) and Frances M. Dudley, particularly their time in Chihuahua, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. The papers date 1898 – 1970. Political clippings relate to several controversies between competing factions in El Paso, including the Ku Klux Klan. Photographs show scenes in Chihuahua, El Paso, North Africa, Port Lavaca, Texas, and unidentified locales. Publications include some Chihuahua newspapers from May of 1911.

Abstract: Olav Elling Eidbo (1918 – 1993) was a professor of music at Texas Western College (later UTEP) and director of the Texas Western Collegiate Chorale. The Olav E. Eidbo papers date 1940 – 1985, bulk 1962 – 1969. The collection was left in the order it was found in Special Collections. Types of records include sheet music, photographs, programs, publications, and other materials. The papers help document Dr. Eidbo’s activities and career at Texas Western College (later UTEP).
Local governmental records housed in Special Collections as part of the Texas Regional Historical Resources Depository program. The records date approximately from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Holdings include deed books, jail registers, probate records, chattel mortgage records, Commissioner Court records, and other materials.

The “Old Criminal Case Files” are local governmental records housed in Special Collections as part of the Texas Regional Historical Resources Depository program. The criminal case files date from 1882 – 1930. The files mostly list the offender’s name, the offense, and the date of the case though some of the files are missing information.

The wills in the El Paso County records are local governmental records housed in Special Collections as part of the Texas Regional Historical Resources Depository program. These handwritten and typed wills date circa 1886 – 1930 and were indexed as part of the probate records.
El Paso del Norte Solidarity Committee records, MS676
The Paso del Norte Solidarity Committee formed in the mid-1990s in response to actions by the Mexican military against indigenous communities in southern Mexico, particularly in Chiapas, Mexico. The records primarily date 1994-1996. The records help document the Committee’s activities and events in Chiapas

This collection dates 1925 – 1984. It contains reports, manuals, and other publications relating to health care, business, city planning, parks, transportation, demographics, labor, neighborhoods, law enforcement, education, and historic preservation in El Paso and El Paso County. The collection also includes multiple years of El Paso City Council minutes. Some of the creating agencies of the documents are the City of El Paso, the County of El Paso, the Texas Department of Transportation, the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Federal Reserve, the El Paso Independent School District, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The El Paso Herald-Post records contain the historical files of the El Paso Herald-Post newspapers. The records date 1881 – 1997. The records contain sports files, photographs and clippings about local people and subjects, and the El Paso Herald-Post’s library files.
El Paso Mass Shooting collection, MS678
The El Paso mass shooting collection, MS678, includes newspapers, clippings, magazines, and pamphlets. The collection also contains a sign from a political rally. The collection helps document the August 3, 2019 terrorist attack in El Paso, which killed 23 people and injured dozens.
El Paso Native Plant Society records, MS703
Established in 1981 by William Mayfield, the El Paso Native Plant Society researches “native plant identification, ecology, and uses; encourages preservation of natural habitats; supports botanical research; and promotes use of native plants for conservation of water, land, and wildlife.” The records date circa 1985 – 2014.

The El Paso Police Department was formally founded in 1884, though it informally existed prior to that date. The El Paso Police Department collection, MS 003, dates from 1912-2007. The collection contains materials that document the daily lives of officers, handbooks of rules and regulations, reports about crime statistics, and photographs of police officers and facilities.
El Paso Times Subject Files, MS265
The El Paso Times began publication in the spring of 1881 as a weekly newspaper operated by M.W. Carrico & Co. It became a daily paper in 1882 and added Associated Press wire service in 1883. After changing hands several times, the Times was purchased from H. D. Slater in 1928 by Dorrance Roderick and Lindsay Nunn. Nunn sold his interest in 1930, and Dorrance Roderick was the publisher even after the newspaper became part of the Gannett chain in 1972. The Times had a joint operating agreement with the El Paso Herald-Post, an afternoon newspaper, from 1936 until 1997, when the Herald-Post ceased operation. Contains clipping files, photographic prints, negatives, correspondence, press releases, pamphlets, and other publications. Subjects include El Paso streets, historical events, El Paso businesses, military affairs on the U.S.-Mexico border, points of interest in the El Paso area, newspaper publishing in El Paso, and individuals, including, among others, José Cisneros, S.L. A. Marshall, R. E. Thomason, and Mabel Welch. Materials were purged from the El Paso Times Library’s clipping files in their library in 1991, at which point the librarian, Judy Soles, offered the discards to Ann Massmann, Acting Head of Special Collections, UTEP Library.

The collection also contains materials about the Engelbrechts’ travels while putting together an index of Trost buildings.
Epperson and Burnett Company records (E and B Spring and Trailer Company), MS522
Epperson and Burnett (also known as E and B Spring and Trailer Co.) specialized in the wholesale of wagon wood and blacksmith supplies, farm machinery, and automobile springs. The company was founded in El Paso, Texas in 1925 by Otis C. Epperson, a blacksmith, and his son-in-law Jack Henry Burnett. Between 1925 and 1935 the business was located at 619 E. Overland Street, and from 1936 through 1954 the business was located at 108 S. Campbell Street. The business shut down in 1954. The company records consist of ledgers, statements, invoices, purchase orders, and bills of lading consistent with the day to day activities of a wholesale business.
The Escajedas, an early El Paso pioneer family, originally came to the El Paso area from Spain. In 1818 the family received a land grant from King Ferdinand VII of Spain, which was later approved by the Mexican government in 1822, and settled in San Elizario and Ysleta. The Escajeda family papers date 1818 – 2005, bulk 1880 – 1932. Types of records include correspondence, photographs, county records, deeds, legal documents, clippings, a family bible, and other printed material.

Earl F. Evans (1898 – 1922) was a military pilot during WWI and the Polish-Soviet War. The Earl F. Evans collection dates 1912 – 1922, bulk 1918 – 1922. The Gertrude Fitzgerald photograph collection consists primarily of images taken by Gertrude Fitzgerald (1876 – 1956) of her family life and people and places related to the travel and work of her husband in Mexico. Other images show scenes from the El Paso, Texas area, including local landmarks and military life at Fort Bliss, as well as some photographs of Mesilla, New Mexico. The collection also contains ephemeral material and a large collection of postcards of El Paso, Texas. The physical makeup of the collection consists mainly of large format negatives and four glass plates along with original photographs.

On November 7, 1918, the Escuela Comercial Nocturna opened in Ciudad Juárez. On September 15, 1934, the school was reorganized under the name of "Escuela Técnica Comercial". The School offered short degrees in Accounting and Secretarial Work. These records date 1938 – 1976. The majority of the collection is related to administrative affairs of the Escuela Técnica.

John Judy Middagh, Jr. was a reporter and telegraph editor at the El Paso Herald-Post until he joined the faculty of Texas Western College in September 1948 where he taught journalism. Middagh eventually became the co-chairman of the Department of Journalism and Radio-Television. The John J. Middagh papers, 1893-1973, bulk 1950-1972, consists primarily of research files collected and organized by Middagh over the course of his career as a reporter and journalism professor. His primary research was the history of El Paso; he also had files on current events of the times, such as Communist propaganda, John F. Kennedy, and the first moon landing.

Saucedo (Mary Carmen) papers, MS708
Mary Carmen Saucedo taught in the El Paso Catholic Schools and El Paso Independent School District before promotions to Assistant Principle, Principle, Consultant, Director of Personnel and finally Associate Superintendent of the El Paso Independent School District. She was the first woman to hold the position of Associate Superintendent. She was also active in the leadership of several professional organizations and was appointed as Chairman of the Board to the El Paso Community Foundation, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and the West Texas Council of Governments.
John McCarty Sharp was a Professor of Language and Linguistics at UTEP where he taught for at least 35 years. His papers date 1910 – 2002 and contain teaching materials, pamphlets, publications, correspondence, class notes, and other items..

Stone and Webster Inc. records, MS018
Engineering contractors Stone and Webster, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts, working in conjunction with the El Paso Electric Railway Company, replaced the old International Bridge on Stanton Street between Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas with a new structure of reinforced concrete in 1924. Materials in the collection consist of typed and handwritten correspondence, field notes, technical engineering drawings, reports, memos, specifications, telegrams, accounting ledger book sheets, and cost estimates.

The Thomas family papers consist of the Paul D. Thomas legal files and the Paul F. Thomas farming records. The legal files contain two cases related to the Hipolito Villa jewelry claims of 1915-1917, and land claims to a ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico by the Babicora Development Company of California in 1956. The farming records contain financial records and worker and production records for Paul F. Thomas’ agricultural pursuits in Fabens, Texas from 1948-1958. These records include some records of braceros (Mexican farm workers).
Robert Ewing Thomason (1879 – 1973) was a lawyer and former mayor of El Paso, Texas, for two terms (1927 and 1929, respectively). He served as a United States Congressman from the 16th District of Texas from 1930-1947, and he was also a United States District Judge of the Western District of Texas from 1947-1963. The papers date from 1863 – 1978 and consist of personal and professional correspondence, documents, records, awards, scrapbooks, photographs and newspaper clippings gathered during his long legal and political career.

Wilbert Helde Timmons taught history at the University of Texas at El Paso for many years. His most popular and well-known work is El Paso: A Borderlands History. The Wilbert H. Timmons papers (1584-1992, bulk 1949 – 1990) are composed primarily of the research papers used by Dr. Timmons during his decades of study of the El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua area. These documents include photocopies and photostats of published material, maps, transparencies, transcriptions of letters, official documents, oral histories, newspaper clippings, student papers, theses, computer disks, and photographs. The Calvin L. Trinity Methodist Church of El Paso, Texas, was founded in 1881, as the Union Sunday School by Rev. A.H. Sutherland, the presiding elder of the South and West Texas Conference, and Rev. John R. Carter. The collection dates 1915 – 1974. The bulk of the collection is research and transcriptions from a variety of newspapers, journals, and newsletters. Also included are photographs of the building, pastors, and members of committees, as well publications of the church, other El Paso Methodist churches, and other Methodist organizations.
The Tripp map collection dates circa 1600s – 1950s. Types of maps include originals as well as reproductions. The maps are from various locales around the world and some maps feature hand coloring work.

Hugh Spotswood White (1875 – 1943) was an El Paso doctor and local medical pioneer. The High Spotswood White collection dates 1970 – 1971, bulk 1971. The collection is arranged in two series – Manuscripts and Correspondence. There are two manuscripts, one is written by Anne Perrin Kemp White, and the other is written by Betty Schuster, using interviews by Anne White. These manuscripts contain biographical information about Dr. White and information about medical care in El Paso during the early twentieth century. The correspondence series contains several letters to and from El Paso historian and archivist Leon Metz.

Hugh Bascom Wilson (May 5, 1890 – October 17, 1985) was born in Mississippi and served in WWI as a private in the U.S. Army. The collection consists of materials relating to the history of the El Paso Division of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company.
